Hmong Youth and Parents United (HYPU) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in 2008 to provide culturally sensitive resources and services to the Hmong and other communities in Sacramento. Our mission is to empower underserved communities by offering culturally sensitive educational, social, and economic services and resources to youth, adults, and parents. Together, we unite individuals to construct a resilient and inclusive community where all can flourish.
WORK DESCRIPTION
HYPU seeks a Program Coordinator (community organizer) to oversee our anti-hate initiatives. The candidate’s role will prioritize planning, coordinating, and implementing community art exhibitions, events, roundtable discussions, and outreach efforts aimed at addressing hate as well as promoting the health and well-being of the community. The candidate will be expected to be able to work independently and in cross-functional teams. Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the program coordinator will be in charge of collaborating with community partners, members, and stakeholders. The candidate will be expected to lead social media campaigns, video-making, storyboarding, and content creation regarding Stop the Hate. The candidate will be expected to intake-navigate as well as work on special events, and exhibitions in regards to Hmong arts and culture.
The ideal candidate should be eager to gain new social and cultural experiences and be able to learn on the go. Ultimately, an exceptional candidate for Program Coordinator is a problem-solver, takes initiative and is a team player with a growth mindset who works well with people of varying personalities and approaches to solutions.
GENERAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
With guidance from the Program Manager, coordinate, implement, evaluate, and monitor program goals and success.
Assist Program Manager in grant reporting and tracking of targeted goals.
Ensures HYPU’s services and programs are delivered in a culturally appropriate manner.
Maintain and organize adequate documentation regarding assigned projects.
Create and maintain excellent organizational and computer skills including experience with project management, word processing, and spreadsheets for comprehensive documentation, plans, and reports.
Assist the Program Manager as needed in partnerships, community events, listening sessions, and stakeholder meetings regarding the Stop the Hate campaign, community advocacy, and outreach.
Take the lead in case management, community surveys, and resource navigation.
Take the lead in special projects, including but not limited to sending out RFPs, organizing exhibits, media production, youth programs, and managing storyboards and short video clips.
Outreach to the community both in-person and virtually.
Assist in any other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience.
Must have a valid California Driver’s License with current auto insurance and reliable transportation.
Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed.
Knowledge of traditional and cultural practices of the diverse Hmong community, as well as the ability to work with other racially, culturally, ethically, and financially diverse populations.
Have at least one year of experience using multimedia equipment and producing videos.
Speak, read, and write Hmong fluently.
Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and efficiently with little supervision and direction.
Maintain transparency and accountability in all communications and work plans with the team.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Adaptable and flexible to changing situations and environments.
Have strong public speaking skills and present in large groups.
Problem-solving skills with a positive mindsight, insights, and foresight to situations or conflicts.
Demonstrated technology skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint (or its equivalent), and Google Drive.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Have a degree related to Social Sciences or two years of work experience in the related field.
Advanced knowledge of traditional and cultural practices and arts of the diverse Hmong community, as well as the ability to work with other racially, culturally, ethically, and financially diverse populations.
Have more than 1 year of experience in using multimedia equipment and producing videos.
Have prior experience in curating and organizing art installations.
Strong background knowledge of Asian American/Hmong history.
Interests in advocacy and preservation of language and cultural arts.
Communicate effectively with people of all ages, genders, and diverse ethnic groups.
